Adult substance misuse treatment statistics

Substance use disorders are an all-too-common phenomenon in the UK. From 2020 to 2021 alone, 130,490 individuals entered into a treatment programme for addiction, but this number does not represent the countless others who never seek treatment. Having an addiction to illicit drugs, alcohol or even cigarettes, often holds a certain stigma that can be difficult to shake off, but it is important to know you are not alone.

Approximately 29% of those in rehab treatment are suffering from an addiction to alcohol, making this the most common substance use disorder. Cigarettes are not far behind with 13.3% of the population regularly smoking. Cases of both cocaine and cannabis addiction treatment have increased, and over half of all those in treatment experience an addiction to opiates, crack or both.

Adult substance misuse statistics

These statistics illustrate the reality of substance misuse in the UK, but is there a way out? The good news is that 126,118 people successfully exited treatment from 2020 to 2021, and it is possible for you to join them. Don’t let fears of stigma or judgement hold you back from reaching your full potential – there is no shame in getting help if you need it.
